Short Sailing Courses over winter

by Chris Kameen on July 4, 2013

A quick update – first of all have you seen our new intro video.. Check it out, it is 2 minutes short and if you like it share it!

The purpose of this post was that we wanted to give you a heads up on a number of short courses and talks that are coming up to get into your diary if you are interested:

1) Wednesday 10th July 7:30pm at Manly 16 foot skiff club

Modern ropes and splicing: Cameron Macdonald has been helping sailors with their rigging for many years and is going to share his knowledge at the skiff club. Cameron recently shared with me how to do some splicing with modern ropes and I was blown away that after all these years I didn’t know how to do it! This is a ‘must attend’ event for anyone who has their own skiff and is still tying bowlines in modern ropes! Everyone attending will take home something useful. A $7.50 cover charge will be levied to buy Cam a beer and to cover the cost of training materials!
2) 12th, 13th and 20th August 7:00pm at Manly 16 foot Skiff Club

Gary and Maz from First Aid plus specialise in First Aid Training in a marine environment, they are experts in this field and do a lot of work with Surf Life Saving Clubs. FirstAidPlus are an accredited RTO and the qualifications are recognised under the Australian Training Framework. This course is intended for Skiff Club members who want to help on the rescue boats, but is also open to non-club members.

There are limited places on this course and their will be some pre-course homework that will be required in order to get the qualfication. This course costs $100 and includes all course materials.

3) On-line – course available at home:

Including over $100 of Navigational tools and Equipment, course notes, training charts, this course is a great introduction to the Essential of Navigation and Safety. Developed by the leading sail training organisation in the world – this course has had raving reviews. This course is aimed at people who know very little about boating in general and want to learn the essentials before getting out on the water. During this course you will also get webinar tutorials and Q&A sessions which make the $197 price tag outstanding value!

4) Introduction to Team Racing: Wednesday 14th August at Manly 16 foot Skiff Club:

Anyone who is in Manly for the 14 foot skiff world Championships in 2011 couldn’t have failed to have been amazed by the Team racing. Teams of 4 skiffs racing against 4 other skiffs around a short 12 minute course with spinnakers provided some of the most exciting racing I’ve ever witnessed. Chris Kameen is a former National Champion in 4 countries including Australia and will give some intro into this exciting and growing sport,

5) Radio Course Manly 16 foot Skiff Club:

Marine Safety Works will be running a Radio Course at Manly 16’s in September – this will be done over three nights, we are just waiting to confirm dates. Remember it is illegal to operate a marine radio without a licence unless you are in distress, the qualification that you get is for life and is recognised in nearly every country in the world. (You will need this qualification if you want to hire a boat in Europe) Genevieve White is an outstanding trainer and has a wealth of experience  – we are just working on the final details

6) Night with an Olympian: 11th September Manly Skiff Club:

First of all well done for reading this far – we’ve saved the best for last!

This is a heads up – one for the diary.. We are 95% certain that we have secured a fantastic speaker to share some insights with us all. This will be an outstanding opportunity to hear insights that large corporates pay thousands of dollars to hear. There will be a cover charge of about $10 but this will be one not to miss. Get it in your diary!

Looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming events or at the Boat Show where we will be on the Bic Stand.

If you can’t make it or think someone else might like to come then do share this on your facebook page or forward on the link!
